From the cycle "Blickwinkel Oper"
Oil on canvas, 2019, 80 x 120 cm (h x w)

Scene and performance from the opera "The Tempest" (after William Shakespeare) by Thomas Adès, Vienna State Opera, 2015. Production by Robert Lepage. Herbert Lippert in the role of the "King of Naples".

"Tempest is a piece full of magic, from beginning to end, and there are a great number of colors in the text. But I didn't want to amplify that in an instrumental way, but in a baroque way. I find magic more effective if it doesn't appear musically every time there's talk of it. I don't want to hide behind the effects." - Original quote Thomas Adès

The production shows the auditorium of an opera house in the opera house itself.

The beginning of the piece starts with a storm, both musically and stage-wise, that ends in a scenario where a performer floats above the stage on a monstrous crystal chandelier. Here the performance in two colors that correspond to the interior of an opera house: Bordeaux red and bright turquoise.
