In an energetic and self-sacrificing appeal, the officer, after learning of the murders of the goldsmith Cardillac to his buyers, prevents the mob from lynching him,(Cardillac). The agitated crowd, armed with knives and sabers, is depicted in shades of gray and black, as is the officer. This monochromatic, gray and black scene brings out the drama of the situation and gives the viewer an interesting look at what is happening.
