Austria is associated with its coffee culture and coffeehouses like hardly any other country - they were and still are meeting places for a wide variety of political and ideological groups, places of residence for impecunious literary figures and, to this day, oases for lingering in the Danube metropolis and the other metropolises of the former Austro-Hungarian Empire. They are unique in the world and have friends and lovers around the globe. With the World Exhibition in Vienna in 1873, Viennese coffee houses suddenly gained worldwide fame. With the incorporation of Vienna's 38 suburbs, the Ringstrasse was created - and along it some 30 opulent coffeehouses that served Vienna's residents with their small apartments as extended living rooms for meetings with friends and acquaintances.
Artists in particular also created a real and metaphorical place here in which they negotiated a more beautiful, better or different world.
