From the cycle "Viewpoint Opera"
Oil on canvas, 2022, 80 x 120 cm (H x W)

Scene and performance from the opera "Dantons Tod" by Gottfried von Einem, Vienna State Opera, 2018. Production by Josef Ernst Köpplinger. Herbert Lippert in the role of Camille Desmoulins.

The production reflects the time of the French Revolution. The focus of the work is the problem of the excesses of violence associated with revolutions in the context of the views of the various figures. The ever widening gap to poverty and the resulting revolution and destruction of society is shown in this painting. Camille Desmoulins is here at the center of a discussion that includes these very themes. Surrounded by Danton and his comrades-in-arms, the aspect of this theme is brought to the point here through the use of only 3 different shades of blue. Centered, the 3 colors are applied to the canvas. No other color distracts from the action and the scene depicted.
